Required training and practice session for all those participating in the Dragon Boat race on Saturday, August 14.

5:30 PM: Meet at the Batter's Box on Hermitage Ave. and walk the few blocks to Riverfront Park for the practice session. Or, just park near Riverfront and meet us.

6:00 PM: Official practice time begins at Riverfront.

A few details about practice sessions from Cumberland River Compact (CRC):

  • CRC will provide a professional Dragon Boat coach for the practice session.
  • Sessions last one hour and teams are expected to be prompt and come ready to paddle.
  • Life jackets, paddles and boat will be provided.
  • It is a good idea to bring a cold beverage so you can stay hydrated- no alcohol please.
  • Your team will gather at the top of the boat ramp behind the Music City Star terminal at Riverfront Park in downtown Nashville for practice.
  • Parking will not be provided; however, we'll suggest parking lots in close vicinity to the Riverfront.
  • Everyone who is paddling will need to visit http://www.nashvilled... before the practice session to register and sign the online waiver. This is very important- no registration, no paddling.
  • Practices are open to the public, so you are welcome to invite your friends or family down to watch.

Of course, if you fall out of the boat you'll probably get mangled by slashing paddles - so the PFD may be irrelevant, other than making it easier to extract your remains. In which case it will be donated for use in next year's races, so it's all good.

What on earth is a PFD?

If you have your own PFD I suggest bringing it. Some of the PFDs provided for us in the past smelled as though they were last used in the Newtown Creek. Two years ago Helen Keller was at the Dragon Boat races and thought she had discovered a decomposed corpse. It was just someone wearing one of their PFDs. Homeless people run away due to the stench. I can keep going but by now you should get the point.
