Dates: APRIL 9-11
Estimated Drive Time One Way: 3 hours
Hike Distance: various
Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous
Hike Leader: Christy O

If you wish to carpool, please meet at Kroger in Hermitage at 5:30 pm on Friday, April 9. Drive time is approximately three hours. People often arrange ride-sharing off-site, or just drive themselves, so we can't promise there will be many (or even any) people at the carpool meetup time.

BSF is technically in the Eastern time zone, but we're all going to stay on Central time for purposes of meeting for hikes and such.

The group hike on Sunday will be Honey Creek (a six-mile strenuous-but-wonderful hike). For both the Saturday and Sunday Pogue Creek hikes (see separate listings on April 10 and 11), no-shows from each hike will have their slots filled with people who are on the waiting lists and camped at Bandy Creek, so sign up for those so that you have a shot.

In addition to regular day-hiking gear (pack, water containers, good shoes or boots, etc), be sure to pack:

  • Tent
  • Air mattress or sleeping pad
  • Sleeping bag or linens/blanket
  • Towel & toiletries, including soap (there are showers at the campground)
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Sunscreen and bug spray - yes, it's that time of year already!
  • Food and camp preparation equipment for breakfast & dinner; lunches which can be packed for the trails

Join us for a weekend of camping and hiking in Big South Fork. We will stay in a campground with showers (please make your own reservations, see below). The centerpiece of this weekend will be two special “exclusive to NHM” sneak peek hikes in Pogue Creek, one of Tennessee’s newest (and still undeveloped) State Natural Areas. You must sign up for these hikes separately, see the calendar to register! Even if you don’t make it onto one of the Pogue hikes, you are welcome to camp with us, as it will be a fun, hike-filled weekend! There are abundant hikes in the area, and at least one group hike will be led on Sunday (members are encouraged to organize small or large groups to hike on Saturday, when most of the organizers will be hiking Pogue).

CLICK HERE to reserve a campsite at Bandy Creek campground at Big South Fork

I recommend reserving a site on Loop A, so that we’ll all be close together. Sites are $19 per night. There is a maximum of 6 people and 2 cars per site. Please use the comment section below to discuss with each other carpool and site-sharing possibilities. Please also update your RSVP comments with your site number as soon as you’ve reserved a site.

I also recommend bringing all the food you'll need for the weekend, as this campground is not very convenient to restaurants or groceries.

Well-behaved, non-nocturnal dogs are permitted, but must be on a leash at all times (even in camp). Also keep in mind that Big South Fork does have black bears and so it is not recommended to leave a dog tied up at camp. Kids are welcome, as well.

More details will be sent to registrants as the event approaches. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hey Gang: Remember that Bandy Creek allows up to six people and two cars per site, so site-sharing should be easy on this one. There is no tent limit, but all tents should fit on a 42' x 23' pad (three backpacking or small tents would easily fit). If you have a site and don't mind sharing, post that in your RSVP comment (or below). If you're looking for a site, post that also, or email someone who has one they are offering to share.

Carmen...looking forward to meeting you and "canid child". I like the idea of having one "pot luck" meal. When I used to camp on the Guatalupe River with a group from Houston, Sunday before leaving we had a huge breakfast with breakfast tacos, guacamole, etc. and any leftovers you wanted to get rid of. It was a great way to end an awesome weekend!

I have A-42 reserved and should have plenty of room for another tent and car, so if anyone ends up needing a campsite I'd be happy to share.......just let me know.

Hey y'all, I enjoy cooking for others. Gonna try out some dutch oven recipes out there. I can feed about 4 people, maybe we can do a pot luck? Let's plan, so we all can prepare and maybe feed more of our fellow Nashville hikers.

Hi Susan, my "canid child" is about 18 months old. Her age was estimated when I adopted her last year.

I'm bringing my canid, she's well behaved, well socialized and very friendly. But she is a big puppy - very playful and lots of energy.

Hi Nicholas: Yes, dogs are welcome, we only ask that they be "well-behaved and non-nocturnal". We apppreciate if they are experienced campers, so you know that they can handle the stimulation without disturbing the group. They must be leashed at all times (that is a BSF regulation).

    •  Being new I thought the Organizer would come by my camp and welcome me to the group and let me in on the hikes/activities that were planned for the weekend. Not one person acknowledged my presents. I'm so glad I brought my dog to keep me company...
    •  Bandy Creek Campground is a great place to spend the weekend. Camping with friends and hiking Pogue Creek, what more could you ask for?
    •  Great campground!
    •  Unbelievable! Fantastic campground (awesome showers)...hike was awesome! More of the same, please!

It was a perfect weekend for camping. This site is deluxe, too, with showers and even a place to wash your dishes....Thank you, Christy, for finding such a great campground for us. John's hike to Twin Arches on Saturday was great, too - a very nice time. Bill and I reveled in the beauty at Honey Creek on Sunday. Pics soon to come on Facebook!
    •  Fantastic weekend, very well organized. Love Big South Fork!
    •  Bandy Creek is a wonderful campground - one of the nicest I've stayed in anywhere. Very much enjoyed the hiking, the campfire company, and the loaner shoees - thanks Eve! And thanks to everyone for a great weekend (including whoever ordered up that weather).
    •  Another great weekend event. Thanks to all who helped organize it!
    • "Wonder Woman"
